Dawson's career in art began as a fiber artist. She created sculptural two and three dimensional pieces, using materials she dyed herself. She enjoyed numerous awards for her fiber art through the eight years she worked in the arena.

Like so many others, Dawson left one arena and entered another. She carried with her her love of texture, color and layering. Each of these are strong elements in her painting. For the past five years, Dawson has worked in acrylic and is excited with the opportunities it lends her.

Recently, Wendy Blazier of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, wrote: "Dawson's 'Moon on a Mission' evidences great painterly technique. There is looseness and surety balanced by gestural control."

Candace Russell, reviewing the annual Broward Art Guild exhibit for City Link magazine, cites the wonders of her painting, "Glowing" as follows: "It is all about the luster of pears and the sensuous of their forms."

Dawson's work is in many private collections and she has exhibited in numerous shows throughout South Florida where she maintains her winter studio, garnering the occasional award. In Florida she has been represented by Gallery Yes and Studio 19 in Fort Lauderdale and Scott Laurent Gallery in Winter Park, and is currently represented in Fort Lauderdale at Art Expressions. In Maine where she spends her summers at her studio in Union, she has been represented by Saturday Cove Fine Arts in Northport and Thomas Spencer Gallery in Yarmouth and currently by Kimber Gallery in Rockland and High Street Gallery in Belfast.
